Subject: series #4: Twins (willdog26) vs Mets (DaMilkMan) Sat Mar 27, 2010 1:07 am
Game 1:
The Twins came into New York swinging...for a couple innings at least. Game started off with a plethora of extra base hits for the Twins in the top of the first inning. Plating 5 runs on 5 hits, however, as the game wore on the Mets clawed their back into the game chipping away at the 5-0 deficit, until the score was 5-3 with the Mets treating to plate a few more.
Fortunately for the Twins the tides turned and the Mets bats went quiet once the Twins got heated back up to pull ahead in the late innings for the win 9-3.
Game 2:
Game 2 of this 3-game series started much the same as game 1 with the Twins striking first to build a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the 3rd. The Mets countered by plating 3 runs in their half of the 3rd inning. This game was filled with many opportunities for both teams to score some runs in the mid innings but were thwarted by timely outs and consistent pitching by both starting pitchers.
The Mets tied the game up in the bottom of the 7th after a lead off triple by David Wright, who was a HR away from hitting for the cycle. A feat which has not been accomplished since John Olerud did it on September 11, 1997. Jim Thome proved why he may have been the best pick up for the Twins in this last off season. With 2 outs in the top of the 8th inning and a runner on first, Mr. Thome pinch hit for the pitcher, on a 1-1 count he crushed a 417 ft 2-Run shot into the New York skyline to give his Twins a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the 8th. The Mets were not done however, on the first pitch of the inning, Murphy crushed a slider down and in over the right field fence to bring the Mets to just 1 run. Hats off to the Twins bullpen though, they pulled through in the 8th and 9th to close the shut the Mets down. Joe Nathan recorded his first save of the season.
